Mission and Objectives

An important trend in the recent evolution of information technologies is the constant increase of (digital) audio and video traffic over the Internet, together with the general convergence of all networked media toward a digital coding/transmission/management. This trend poses interesting and challenging problems onto the folowing aspects:

• The network infrastructure (audio and video streams are time sensitive, and need some kind of QoS from the network to be usable)
• The operating system (because, for example, high-performance networking and guaranteed latencies are needed. Operating system support for quality adaptation is also useful for handling multimedia contents)
• The security perspective (sometimes, the streams must be accessible only for a restricted and selected subset of clients, therefore access control may be necessary)
• The audio/video encoding point of view (for example, there is an increasing request for error resilience features in the codecs, for fine-grained scalability, etc.)
• Intellectual rights and Copyright management

Based on these considerations, Department of Information Science and Engineering (DISI) of the University of Trento has recently activated a group of researchers with leading-edge interdisciplinary competences in ICT, constituting the iMedia Application Lab. Our lab aims to be an aggregation point for researchers from different backgrounds and projects willing to share their experience and competences and to cooperate in developing advanced multimedia applications.
